Pupafita
upcoming performance
22-11-2026 15h Ten Weyngaert Forest, Brussel
Performance in which transparent Chinese skin puppets move through a passing 200-meter painting. The colorful puppets are made of transparent leather, following the millennia-old Asian tradition, which stretches from China to Turkey. All the puppets have been designed by Onnen and hand cut by various Chinese craftsmen. In this case, the screen is a large tilted transparent table on which a long drawing rolls past. A camera under the table transmits the image directly to the film screen; The PUppet-PAper-FIlm-TAble The audience sees a colorful live animation with puppeteers and musicians on either side.
Three male painters; James '100 BelgianFrancks' Ensor, Frans '10 guilders' Hals, and Eugene '100 French Francks' Delacroix step out of their old pre-euro banknotes to find out what happend. Frida '500 Pesos' Kahlo stays untouched and continues to circulate quietly. Before the introduction of the euro, artists populated national money. Painters, composers, writers, poets and other visionaries showed what could not be depicted in money: the value of art. And today, with digital money, the concept of 'value' is no longer dependent on culture but on technology. The magical invisible chip on the bank card or phone proves more enchanting than any artist or god.
